Xi visit: India and China capable of resolving border issue through dialogue

China and India could resolve the disputed border issue through an equitable and reasonable way based on dialogue, the foreign ministry said Thursday, days before President Xi Jinping's upcoming visit to India.

Foreign ministry spokesperson, Hua Chunying, without referring to how much focus will be on the border dispute during his high-profile tour, said both countries had the "confidence and capability" to resolve the issue through consultation.

"As for the border issue is concerned we are all committed to maintaining tranquility and peace at the border. We will strive for an equitable and reasonable solution based on negotiation and consultation. We have confidence and capability to do that," Hua said.

"The two sides have a consensus on maintaining good bilateral relations," she said.

"The Indian NSA (AK Doval) conveyed the message from Indian PM (Narendra Modi) that as two large developing countries our enhanced cooperation in stable environment will make significant contribution to world stability and peace."

Both Indian and Chinese diplomats have been cautious not to put much focus on the festering border dispute in the run-up to Xi's visit to India. Instead, they have broadly emphasised on the bilateral economic agenda that could be firmed up during the meeting between Xi and Modi.

During his visit to Beijing earlier this week, Doval had said that while both were "powerful, popular and decisive leaders" to expect a breakthrough in the long-standing issue would be speculation.

Doval is said to have been "unhappy" at media reports that suggested a breakthrough in the border was expected during Xi's visit.

Xi had told Doval during their meeting at the Great Hall of the People that he might have met Modi for the first time in Brazil in July but it felt like meeting a friend.

"During our attendance at the BRICS Summit in Brazil this July, Prime Minister Modi and I met for the first time, and I felt like meeting an old friend," an official statement quoted Xi as saying.

Official news agency Xinhua said Thursday that Xi would deliver a "speech in New Delhi to expound on China-India relations and China's south Asia policy".

"China and India, the two largest developing countries in the world, as well as the world's major emerging economies, have great cooperation potential. During his visit, Xi and Indian leaders will plan the development of China-India relations and identify priority areas and directions of bilateral cooperation," the report said.
